For such a small country, Scotland provides visiting golfers a vast array of golf courses to choose from but inevitably many of the requests we get here at Fairways to Heaven Golf focus on St Andrews and why not, right? Home to the Old Course, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and a laundry list of others, it provides an unforgettable golf experience. But there are so many other options that provide an equally enjoyable golf experience that we recommend our customers consider. One of our favorites is the East Lothian area…..Scotland’s Golf Coast.
Lying just on the other side of Edinburgh from St. Andrews visiting golfers have no less than 20 courses to choose from all within 30 minutes of each other. Visitors could easily spend 2 weeks in the area and never play the same course twice if they were of the mind. Accommodation varies from the 5+ star to the country inn delivering wide of array of options for every taste & budget. Here are a few of our favorites courses in the area.
Muirfield – As an Open Championship venue Muirfield is certainly a course most golfers have heard of and one that should be on all golfers list when visiting the area. BUT PLAN AHEAD!! Visitors are only allowed on Tuesdays and Thursdays and many of the tee times for 2019 are already sold! Take advantage of the 36 hole option which has golfers come into the clubhouse after their morning round, put on a jacket and tie, eat lunch, and then change again and head out for another 18 with alternate shot in the afternoon.
Gullane – golf has been played over the links at Gullane for over 350 years and offers visitors 3 wonderful inks courses to choose from. #1 is welcoming back the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open this summer adding to the already impressive resume held by the club. Courses # 2 and 3 were designed by Willie Park and offer unique challenges to visiting golfers.
North Berwick – located in the picturesque village of North Berwick, the West Links here is one of the most unique and enjoyable in all of Scotland. With 6 holes along the sea, a wall between the fairway and the green on the 13th hole, and a brilliant 18th green lying directly in front of the door to the clubhouse, an unforgettable golf experience awaits.
Dunbar – A bit further down the coast visitors will find Dunbar Golf Club…..an Open Championship Qualifying venue with over 150 years of golfing history. Offering stunning scenery with sea views on many holes, this classic links is always well received by visitors to the club. Members truly appreciate guests to their club and offer a warm welcome on the course and in the clubhouse.
The Glen Golf Club – The Glen, East Links as it is known offers a stunning backdrop as much of the course is set atop of clifftop across the Firth of Forth to Bass Rock. Frequently overshadowed by its well known neighbor, North Berwick,The Glen provides a wonderful option for a second round of golf when visiting the area. 5 time Open Champion James Braid has his hands in the design of this must play links when visiting Scotland’s Golf Coast.
